The semester full of Drama – Sociology and Design Fundamentals

Reflecting on My Teaching Journey: Last Semester’s Design Fundamentals and Sociology & Anthropology Classes

As an educator at Manipal School of Architecture and Planning, every semester brings a new set of challenges, experiences, and rewarding moments. The last semester was particularly enriching, with my involvement in teaching Design Fundamentals and Sociology and Anthropology to design students. Both courses offered unique opportunities to explore innovative pedagogical methods, blending creativity with critical thinking and contemporary relevance.

Design Fundamentals: Narratives Through Graphics

In the Design Fundamentals course, I encouraged students to not only create graphical works but to embed entire narratives within their designs. This approach allowed them to explore storytelling as a powerful tool in design. Each project was more than just a visual representation; it was a story waiting to be told. Students articulated their concepts, inspirations, and processes through detailed narratives that accompanied their graphics. This exercise not only honed their design skills but also enhanced their ability to communicate their ideas effectively.

From initial sketches to final presentations, students were motivated to think deeply about the ‘why’ behind their designs. This narrative-driven approach fostered creativity, critical thinking, and a deeper connection with their work. Witnessing their growth and the originality they brought to their projects was truly inspiring. The final submissions reflected not just technical prowess but also the personal journeys of each student, making the evaluation process a deeply engaging experience.

The storytelling component brought a new dimension to the design process. Students researched historical, cultural, and social contexts to enrich their narratives, making their graphics more than just aesthetic pieces but reflections of deeper meanings. This method helped students see design as a medium for expression and communication, rather than merely a technical skill.

One particularly memorable project involved students creating graphical representations of urban legends, folklore, and cultural anecdotes from their hometowns. This not only fostered a sense of belonging and pride but also allowed them to bring diverse perspectives into the classroom. Their final works were displayed in an exhibition that garnered appreciation from peers and faculty alike, highlighting the success of integrating storytelling into design education.

Sociology and Anthropology: Bridging Current Affairs with Interior Design

Teaching Sociology and Anthropology was an equally fulfilling experience. The course was designed to be dynamic, incorporating a variety of allied fields such as education, economics, politics, and management. What made this course particularly engaging was the active involvement of students in shaping the curriculum. At the beginning of the semester, I asked students about the topics they were interested in discussing. Their inputs helped in creating a syllabus that was not only relevant but also exciting for them.

Throughout the semester, we delved into current affairs and analyzed news articles, connecting these real-world events to the principles of sociology and anthropology and, ultimately, to interior design. Discussions ranged from the impact of social movements on spatial design to the influence of economic policies on housing and urban development. This approach ensured that students could see the direct relevance of sociological and anthropological concepts in their field of study.

One of the highlights was exploring how cultural narratives and societal changes shape interior spaces. Students were encouraged to bring news articles to class, and we would dissect these pieces to understand their implications on design. This method not only kept the course content fresh and up-to-date but also equipped students with the ability to critically analyze and incorporate social contexts into their design work.

We explored case studies such as the impact of migration on urban housing, the role of gender in space utilization, and the influence of political ideologies on architectural styles. Students were also tasked with creating design proposals that addressed contemporary social issues, such as affordable housing, inclusive spaces for differently-abled individuals, and sustainable community centers.

Integrating Teaching with Current Trends

Both courses were structured to ensure that students were not just passive learners but active participants in their educational journey. By integrating storytelling in design and current affairs in sociology and anthropology, the aim was to provide a holistic learning experience. The positive feedback from students, their engagement, and the originality of their work have been a testament to the success of this approach.

The semester also included guest lectures from industry experts, panel discussions, and collaborative projects that exposed students to real-world challenges and solutions. These experiences not only enriched their learning but also prepared them for professional practice.

This semester has reinforced my belief in the importance of adaptive teaching methods. Allowing students to voice their interests and encouraging them to stay connected with real-world issues has made the learning process more meaningful for them and more fulfilling for me as an educator.

Looking Ahead

As I continue to evolve as an educator, I aim to keep integrating innovative teaching methods that resonate with students and prepare them for the dynamic field of design. This blog post marks an important addition to my teaching portfolio, reflecting my commitment to fostering an engaging and relevant learning environment.
